Weare Animal Hospital was founded in 1992 by Dr. Michael Dutton and is located in the Old Weare Post Office. The original facility was 980 square feet and had one exam room, a small reception area and had as staff one doctor, one technician and a part-time receptionist. Our original and continuing focus is on companion and exotic pets.
In 1996, a 3000 square foot addition was started and we moved into it in June of that year. This addition allowed us to continue to expand the services we offer our clientele including more advanced diagnostics, boarding and grooming. With the additional space, we also increased both our veterinarian and technical staff to better serve our patients.
Today we now have an approximately 4000 square foot facility which offers the latest in patient care. We also serve as a local referral center for area veterinarians.

Cat and Exotic Pet Boarding
We also board cats and exotic pets. They are boarded in a quiet room away from the dog cages and runs. Cats have their own room in which they can play. Ferrets also get one to two hours of play time a day.
Cats may stay in regular cat cages or the more spacious kitty condos.
We can accommodate your pet's dietary choices or feed Hill's Science Diet.

Dog Boarding
We board dogs in a state-of-the-art boarding facility. Cages and runs come in a variety of sizes.
Dogs are walked outside in our fenced in yard four times daily (the last walk starting at 10:00 p.m.).
We can accommodate your pet's dietary choices or feed Hill's Science Diet. We also handle the medicated pet who needs boarding.

Treatment
The treatment area is the heart of our inpatient service. Here we hospitalize and nurse our patients back to health. It also serves as a recovery area after surgeries.
Easy access to nursing equipment such as fluid pumps makes this a complete facility. Non-sterile surgeries are performed here on a 'tub table' that allows for easy clean up. Two incubators also allow us to give intensive care for our smaller dogs, cats, and exotic pets. The area has piped in oxygen to run the anesthesia machines.
The far side of treatment also serves as our in-house laboratory where we use a variety of machines and test kits including IDEXX analyzers.
Our patients are housed in stainless steel cages and provided with blankets and comforters. We also perform dental cleanings and other dental procedures in the Treatment area.

Surgery
On a typical day we do five to six scheduled surgeries. These surgeries range from spays and neuters to more complicated orthopedic and exotic pet procedures.
Because surgery requires the use of anesthesia, we have invested heavily in time and money to provide the safest anesthetic regimen possible. We use isoflurane as a gaseous anesthetic delivered by one of our two anesthesia machines. We have as monitoring equipment a doppler blood pressure machine, an electrocardiogram monitor, a pulse oximeter (to measure your pet's blood oxygen saturation), and a respiration monitor.
The most important piece of monitoring equipment is our technical staff that constantly oversees your pet during the anesthetic period.

Reception
At reception you check in and out and pick up medications.
The little cage set into the counter is for cats that are not in pet carriers. The black mat under the window is a floor scale to weigh your pet.
We also carry a small amount of retailing (foods, supplements, and flea products).

Exam Rooms
Exam Rooms 1 and 2 are typically for dogs. Your pet is examined by the veterinarian in the exam room and any needed outpatient medications are given.
Exam Room 3 is for cats and exotic pets. We have an extensive exotic pet practice, comprising in 1998 almost 17% of our caseload.
If your pet requires more extensive medical diagnostics or therapy, we will hospital the pet on a inpatient basis.

Grooming
We also groom pets. We have a dedicated room for grooming that has its own ventilation system.
Our groomers are experienced and can easily handle most grooming requirements. For a consistently 'beautiful' dog or cat, we recommend periodic groomings every six weeks.

Isolation
As one of our functions as a local referral center, we also have a dedicated isolation room and airlock.
Occasionally a pet will develop a highly contagious disease (such as canine parvovirus) and need quarantine. These cases can prove troublesome if an isolation room is not available since veterinarians do not want to expose other healthy animals. Some veterinary facilities even have to stop seeing patients until the quarantine is over.
Here at the Weare Animal Hospital, we provide the solution. Our isolation room and airlock are under negative air pressure and is separately vented. Access to outside is on the opposite side of the building from the healthy population. Full body coveralls are used when handling the patients.

Pharmacy
Unlike human medicine, most veterinary practices still dispense the majority of pharmaceuticals needed for your pet.
In the pharmacy we also keep an ultrasound machine for pregnancy checks on dogs and cats. The ultrasound machine also allows us to do detailed studies in real-time of internal structures such as the heart.

Radiology
X-rays allow us to visualize internal structures. Many diseases can be diagnosed with the use of x-rays including bone fractures, heart disease, and some abdominal masses.
We have a 300 ma, 1/120 radiology machine made by Summit that allows excellent x-rays. To go along with the machine, we have an AFP automatic processor for quick development of those x-ray films.
In addition to radiology, we also have ultrasound and endoscopic (rigid and flexible) equipment to allow diagnostic imaging of your pet.
